WRITING ABOUT THE REFUGEE CRISIS
At the start of quarter three, I was certain that my work would revolve around developing designs for a sustainable shelter to be proposed as a solution for the housing issue in the refugee crisis. So, I read a few articles, took a few notes, then realized the issue is much larger than I thought. It was time to go back to the drawing board, but this initial search was in no way a failure. To broaden my understanding of the issue I began to look beyond shelters. I compiled roughly 10 new articles with topics ranging from camp layouts to refugee cities, I printed these off, read through them, and made notes as I went along (all of these articles can be found in my annotated bibliography with a short explanation of each). After I finished reading all of the articles I brought my notes and new knowledge to my social studies advisor, Ben to talk about the interesting ideas in each and the similarities between all of the compiled articles. After our meeting, I went back and looked deeper into the ties between each of the articles. I made notes about the similarities which seemed most prominent and interesting to me. With this, I went forward with choosing three topics I will write about during my final quarter in the Pilot. For each of the three pieces, I completed a small write up about what I would be writing, and the large ideas for each of the pieces. The document can be viewed below.
